Next Tuesday at 10am (Irish time), the winner of the European Charlemagne Youth Prize will be announced at a ceremony in Aachen in Germany. This year's Irish nominee for the prize is 'You are here' - a book project including contributions from 14 young people across Europe. The project, which was submitted by John Holten from Ardee, Co. Louth, brought together young people born after 1980 'who enjoy freedom of movement in Europe and work in a country they did not grow up in.'

General : On Thursday 29 April European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek will formally open the European Parliament's new Liaison Office with the US Congress, designed to help forge closer links between European parliamentarians and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The Liaison Office is the first office of the European Parliament in a country outside the EU. Committees : Recommendations on enhancing the visibility of the work of human rights defenders and on providing EU emergency visas to enable them and their families to escape oppressive regimes are set out in a resolution drafted by Human Rights Subcommittee chair Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) and approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday. The resolution also strongly condemns the use of new surveillance technologies to keep tabs on human rights defenders in their home countries.

Committees : Greece's fiscal consolidation measures and the support plan drawn up by the other EU Member States and the IMF are welcome, but Greece and other Eurozone countries must make a special effort to restore public trust in the sustainability of public finances, said outgoing ECB Vice-President Lucas Papademos in his last appearance before the EP Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on Tuesday. Mr Papademos was presenting the ECB's annual report for 2009.

General : On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman laid the foundations of the European Union as we know it today, calling for a Europe built on concrete achievements, starting with genuine solidarity. To mark the Schuman Declaration's 60th anniversary, the European Parliament and other EU institutions will hold a festival of Europe and open days in Brussels on 8 May and Strasbourg on 9 May. Economic governance and monetary policy took centre stage in Thursday's annual debate on the Euro area with ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet and European Commissioner Olli Rehn. At the start of Thursday's plenary sitting, Parliament's President Jerzy Buzek made statements to the House about two recent events. He condemned the killing of French policeman Jean-Serge Nerin by the Basque separatist group ETA on 16 March and expressed support for members of the Cuban opposition group Ladies in White (Damas de Blanco) who have been arrested by the Cuban authorities. Ladies in White was awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for human rights in 2005.

Full harmonisation of all consumer rights in the EU would in practice mean a levelling down of some such rights, believe MEPs. "This is no longer an option", agreed Commissioner Viviane Reding when speaking to the EP Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee on Tuesday. The issue of whether Iceland should reimburse the UK and the Netherlands for €3.9bn lost by British and Dutch savers in the Icesave crash is a bilateral one, and it should not prevent EU leaders from giving their go-ahead at the end of March for the start of EU-Iceland accession negotiations, said Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs at a meeting with EU enlargement Commissioner Štefan Füle late on Monday. Some MEPs were sceptical about whether Reykjavik really wishes to join the EU.
